ALBA Berlin started a new era in fine fashion as the German champion won its first game of the preseason by knocking off Bakken Bears 84-75. Not only did the game against the Danish champ start the preparations for the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague season, but it was also ALBA’s first contest with Israel Gonzalez as new head coach.

Gonzalez filled in for Aito Garcia Reneses for a few games last season but took over the team after the veteran playcaller took a sabatical from ALBA. The team responded by racing away in the early going and leading 27-13 after 10 minutes. The game was even at 41-41 at halftime and was close until the final three minutes when Berlin went on a 11-3 run to put the game away. Luke Sikma led ALBA with 19 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals, Johannes Thiemann picked up 16 points and both Yovel Zoosman and Tim Schneider tallied 13 points.

Olympiacos Piraeus for its part captured the title at the bwin Tournament against Covid-19 with a 98-93 victory over AS Monaco in a battle of EuroLeague teams. Monaco jumped ahead by 11 points early on at 7-18 but the game was close the rest of the way. Monaco led 18-25 after 10 minutes and the host team led 55-51 at halftime. Monaco was once again up 72-75 after three quarters before Olympiacos took the final frame 26-18. Sasha Vezenkov paced five Olympiacos players in double figures with 24 points while Tyler Dorsey poured in 20 points and Livio Jean-Charles had 19 points. Monaco’s leading scorer was Danilo Andjusic with 20 points while Donatas Motiejunas tallied 18 points and Paris Lee collected 13 points and 12 assists.

FC Barcelona failed in its attempt for an early crown as it lost to BAXI Manresa 81-70 in the Lliga Catalana final. Barcelona pulled ahead by double figures 20-30 but Manresa got back in the game and the host side finished the game with an 8-0 run over the final 2 minutes. Barcelona could not take advantage of Rolands Smits scoring 14 points and Nick Calathes hitting for 13 points as Ismael Bako paced Manresa with 18 points.
