DEPT. COMMUNICATION CB CLARINOS

From the sports management, to the new manager of the Tenerife technical staff. Juan Carlos Afonso ‘Foncho’ assumes this new task within the purple institution, where this past Sunday he directed his first official meeting against Innova-TSN Leganés.

The highest figure of the coaching staff is not unknown to ‘Foncho’. Not even at the elite level. After his time spent at CB Isla de Tenerife, he resumed the role for the remainder of the campaign with the utmost enthusiasm, within a proven experience with a lifetime dedicated to orange sport. “It was a request from the board. The market is complicated in every way and I am proud of the trust placed in it. For work and desire, it will not be. We have to think for the benefit of the club ”, he declared to the official media.

Within a process that aims to simmer, ‘Foncho’ Afonso reveals the keys to giving a qualifying boost to the team in the Endesa Women’s League. “We have not added many training sessions together but, slowly, we will add and correct details. This week marks the future, as we can work more calmly because we don’t have a game during the week. First, we have to improve in defense and, from there, improve in terms of transitions, longer game and more comfortable shooting situations ”.

In addition, she understands that one of the basic pieces is “to recover the motivation of the players, since the last results have diminished us, with defeats that have been short and hurt more. With the daily work and the enthusiasm of the girls, the reward will come ”.

One of the slabs of Tenerife during this first stretch of competition has come in the injury chapter. “We have had a high amount of setbacks. Of ten players on the squad, six are injured or touched. Atonye (Nyingifa) and ‘Monty’ are still injured and unfortunately we don’t know when they will be available. It is difficult because it reduces us when it comes to preparing for matches, especially when we play twice during the week, with a less prolonged recovery time. Like it or not, it takes its toll, since it also affects the burden of those who are healthier. Changing the dynamics involves recovering assets ”.

For this reason, he insists on mental courage. “I don’t think it was a question of confidence, since we scored in training sessions, but I think our nerves have played tricks on us. For this reason, it is time to recover the girls in a matter of spirit, rather than basketball player ”.

Afonso also does not forget the club’s greatest added value: the fans, for those who have a message. “The girls are excited because we believe that we will carry it out. Obviously, the more support we have at home, the better. We need your assistance and that you be with us because a difficult schedule is coming. I know it is not easy but, if we are united during this downturn, the players will grow ”.
