ANDhe Israeli guard Gal Mekel, 33 years old, has become MoraBanc Andorra’s new signing until the end of this season.

Mekel, who played for Unicaja Málaga the last two seasons, arrives in the Principality after Sergi García’s injury and Clevin Hannah’s muscle discomfort.

Gal Mekel also played for Herbalife Gran Canaria in 2017, but his career began with the Shockers at Wichita State University before signing his first professional contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He was loaned to Hapoel Gilboa Galil Elyon and became the best rookie in the Israeli league with 6.9 points and 2.6 assists.

In 2013, he signed with the Dallas Mavericks of the NBA and became the second Israeli to play in the best basketball competition in the world. Two years later he returned to Europe to play for Estrella Roja and in 2017 he signed for Herbalife Gran Canaria where he averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 assists.

His second experience in Spain was at Luis Casimiro’s Unicaja Málaga, where he arrived from Pallacanestro Reggiana. In Malaga, last season he only played 12 games with 6 points, 3.7 assists and a PIR of 6.6. In total, he has 55 games in the Endesa League.

Francesc Solana, MoraBanc sports director, analyzed the signing of Gal Mekel. “We wanted a player who will give us knowledge of the game and Mekel is a safe bet. He is a player who knows the ACB League and the EuroCup and this factor also helps us to think that he is the man we need at the moment,” he said.
