Javier Rodríguez (Porriño, Pontevedra, 1979) is the new coach of the Movistar Estudiantes men’s first team, which he will lead this 2022-23 season in LEB Oro.

Rodríguez, with an extensive career as an ACB and LEB player, already knows the category as a coach: he was head coach of a club as established in the LEB Oro as Oviedo Club Baloncesto, between 2018 and 2020.

He was previously assistant coach to Carles Marco in the Asturian team, between 2015 and 2018. This 2021-22 season he has been part of Álex Mumbrú’s coaching staff at Surne Bilbao Basket, which has been 9th in the Endesa ACB League.
A classic as a player As usual, Javier Rodríguez’s move to the bench came naturally, after a very long career as a top-level player. He retired after being injured in 2012-13, being a Manresa player.

It was the end of a 16-year professional career, after training in the Baskonia academy – with whom he debuted in ACB in 1997-98 and whose first team he was part of in 1999-2000 – and playing in the United States in High School and NCAA two years.

In addition to the Alava club, he went through Gijón (in LEB in 98-99 and in ACB between 2000 and 2002), Breogán (two stages, 2002-03 and between 2004-05 and 2006-07), Fuenlabrada (2003- 04) and Bilbao Basket (2009 to 2011, including ACB runner-up), in addition to the aforementioned Manresa in two stages (2006-07 to 2008-09, with promotion to ACB included; and between 2011 and its retirement).

As a player he was also international with Spain both in training categories (European cadet silver in 1995) and with the so-called “Selección B” (Mediterranean Games champion 2001) and the absolute (debuting in the pre-European 2003).

The new collegiate coach will be presented to the media the week of July 25
