ANDhe success of Barça from the perimeter, with 15 of 26 in triples, decided the Catalan derby this Sunday at the Palau Blaugrana (99-84) against a seasoned Joventut who fought tirelessly and sterile to achieve the comeback.

The match was not decided until the last quarter, when the scoring breakthrough of Nico Laprovittola, who scored 11 of his 21 points in the final period, opened an insurmountable gap for the Verdinegro team.

The ‘Penya’ arrived in top form to the derby, after certifying the status of the Copa del Rey head of the series and with a defeat in the last seven days, while Barça had two wins in a row despite chaining three league defeats against his hobby

Barça suffered the casualties in the paint of Sertac Sanli, POSITIVE IN covid-19, and Pierre Oriola, injured, as well as shooting guard Alex Abrines, to counteract the centimeters of former Barça player Ante Tomic, the top scorer with 20 points and 8 rebounds.

The Palau Blaugrana received with an ovation the point guard Pau Ribas, who wore five seasons as a Barça player, and especially Tomic, who played eight seasons in Barcelona.

Three triples by Nikola Mirotic catapulted Barça from the start, lucid in attack with three point guards on the court (Nick Calathes, Nico Laprovittola and Dante Exum), while Tomic shot ex officio in the paint to add Joventut’s first six points against inexperienced James Nnaji, 17 years old (11-6, min.5).

The black-and-white blocking from the perimeter (1 of 6 in the first quarter), a hindrance, contrasted with the Barça success (5 of 8), boosted by Rokas Jokubaitis’s goal, with six consecutive points (21-8, min .8).

From the 24-13 with which the first quarter ended, it went to 28-18 (min. 13) with prominence for a Brandon Davies who went from less to more, because after losing two balls he recomposed himself with four points and a block.

Tomic’s return to the court, with four goals in a row, fueled a ‘Penya’ who had already taken a couple of steps in defensive aggressiveness and scored easy points in transition (31-26, min.16) to the despair of Jasikevicius.

Despite the appearance of Laprovittola with two triples, the dark-green intensity in their own field forced Barça to make bad decisions, while Tomic (top scorer at halftime with 14 points and 8 rebounds) continued to impose his size near the rim (40-35 at the break, with a partial of 7-17 closing).

After the break, there was an electric exchange of baskets. The Davies-Calathes connection contributed nine points in a row for Barça, but Joventut responded with another nine goals from Brodziansky, who was powerful near the rim (53-46, min.25).

Nine points from Nigel Hayes-Davies and another two from Kyle Kuric opened a gap on the scoreboard (62-49, min. 27), but ‘Penya’ recovered their defensive tone and contained the breakaway (66-56, end of the third quarter).

A quick 3-9 run, led by Guillem Vives (17 points, 15 in the last quarter), tightened the electronic score (69-65, min. 33), but veterans Davies, Mirotic, Calathes and Kuric came to the rescue of the Barça (84-73, min.36).

Two consecutive triples by Kuric and a third by Laprovittola (11 points, with three triples without fail in the last quarter) increased the Barça escape to a partial 23-12 (92-77, min. 38), a blow to which the Joventut no longer managed to respond (99-84).
