ANDhe Real Madrid Cape Verdean center Walter Tavares has been chosen for the second consecutive season as the best defender of the 2021-22 Endesa Basketball League, with only one point ahead in the votes of the experts compared to the second, the Nigerian inside player from Baxi Manresa Chima Moneke.

The interior of Real Madrid is, with three games to go before the end of the regular season, the top blocker in the Endesa League, with an average of 1.8 blocks per game, the fourth rebounder (6.9 average per game ), second in offensive rebounds (2.8) and seventh in defensive sacks (4.1).

Tavares, who already won the award last season and has to his credit the only two editions of this individual distinction, added a total of 14 points from the seven members of the jury selected by the Association of Basketball Clubs (ACB) , and received full marks from former player Sitapha Savané, coach Dusko Ivanovic and communicator Tresco Ball.

“I have to thank the team for this award. If I’m not mistaken, I think it’s the best defensive year for the entire team. So this award comes largely from the whole team,” said Tavares, who thanked the support he receives from his teammates to defend. “I only have to help them by finishing with a stopper or by intimidating the attacker (…) If the team is not there, it becomes very difficult for me to defend,” he added.

The second classified was Chima Moneke, one of the great protagonists of Manresa’s great season, selected as the best by the coach Joan Plaza and the journalist Antoni Daimiel, and who added 13 units, just one of the mark of Tavares.

Unicaja guard Alberto Díaz was third with 8 points, followed by French guard from Gran Canaria Andrew Albicy and Latvian forward from Barça Rolands Smits. Two other Barcelona players, forward Sergi Martínez and Greek point guard Nick Claathes, and the Brazilian midfielder from UCAM Murcia Augusto Lima closed the classification, tied on one point.
