The Women’s National Team begins this Thursday (6:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. in the Canary Islands) in Szekszard the qualification for the Women’s EuroBasket 2023 in Israel and Slovenia. Or what is the same, Miguel Méndez will debut as National Manager against Hungary at home. A demanding match that will be broadcast live on Teledeporte. Romania (opponent of the Women’s League this Sunday the 14th in Almería, an event for which tickets can still be purchased) and Iceland complete Group C. The first classified will obtain the ticket for the next EuroBasket. The second classified, in the case of being one of the four best seconds, will also suffer the same fate.
Silvia Domínguez, 195 times international, will take over from Laia Palau to assume the captaincy of a National Team in which Irati Etxarri will debut at 23 years of age. The bases Maite Cazorla and Leticia Romero; the escorts Leonor Rodríguez and Queralt Casas; the forwards María Conde, Laura Quevedo and Alba Torrens; Paula Ginzo (power forward) and centers Laura Gil and Raquel Carrera complete the roster of twelve players. Georgina Bahí and Ángela Salvadores have also traveled to Hungary with the rest of the expedition.
An expedition that has moved this Wednesday from Guadalajara, place of the concentration, and that in the afternoon has a training session scheduled at the Szekszard Varosi Sportcsarnok. It will be the first time that Spain plays in the town of Szekszard, but not the first to do so on Hungarian soil. On his last visit to Hungary, on June 28, 2015 he managed to hang the continental bronze medal around his neck. To date, the Women have played a total of 27 matches in the Magyar country. This Thursday, in turn, will be the twenty-fifth match against Hungary, a rival that has been beaten on the last four occasions, but which dominates on the aggregate by a tight 11-13.
Miguel Méndez: “Hungary is our main rival in the group”
“We are going to play on a difficult field, very small and with many people and against a team that is our main rival in the group. Hungary has three young players who are already present and who are showing great things in the Endesa Women’s League. It will be a truly important baptism. Having just two days makes it difficult to change many things for a new coach. In addition, we arrived with significant casualties. On the outside line we have players already consolidated in Europe, but this week will be an important test for the inside players, many of whom are new and will need some time”.
Silvia Domínguez: “It is time to become strong”
“Giving a relief to a player who has been captain like Laia for many years is a piece of cake, a complicated role since being captain of the National Team is not the same as being captain of a club. It is not always easy to create that harmony within the group, but for me it is one more challenge to try to help all the teammates feel comfortable both on and off the track.
For Hungary it is an opportunity to start adding. It is time to become strong in this qualifying phase. I expect a hostile environment in the pavilion. We have a good touchstone ahead”.
