TFollowing the officialization of the signings of Matt Costello and Vanja Marinkovic, TD Systems Baskonia has confirmed the arrival of its third addition for next season: Simone Fontecchio. The Italian forward, 25 years old and 203 centimeters tall, arrives from ALBA Berlin after exercising a termination clause of his contract – he still had two more years with the German team – and signs for three seasons.

Fontecchio has been one of the revelations of the last edition of the Euroleague, averaging 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.6 assists in just over 23 minutes per game. His good campaign at ALBA -with whom he was proclaimed champion of the Bundesliga this past June- has had a brilliant continuation in the last pre-Olympic tournament played with his team, becoming the top scorer (19.7 points) and a key piece for the ” azzurri “will get the ticket for the Tokyo Olympics.

Raised in a family of athletes (his mother played basketball, winning two league titles with Vicenza and his father was runner-up in Europe in the 60-meter hurdles), and trained in the lower categories of the Virtus de Bologna, the new Baskon player stood out for his talent from a very young age, signing his first professional contract and making his debut in the highest category of his country without having reached the age of majority. In Bologna, he stayed for four seasons, being named the best U-22 player in the LEGA in 2015, before joining the ranks of the Armani Exchange Milano in 2016.

In Milan he savored his first titles, proclaiming himself champion of the Supercoppa up to three times (2016, 2017 and 2018) and of the Italian Cup in one (2017). However, Fontecchio could not consolidate his role in the Milanese squad, and after a loan to Vanoli Cremona in the 2017-18 season, the forward ended up packing his bags in 2019-20 to join Reggio Emilia and average 11.0 points – with 44.3% in triples- in what would be his last stage in his country.

His projection and talent would attract the attention and arouse the interest of Himar Ojeda and Aíto García Reneses in Berlin, an interest that materialized in the signing of a three-season contract between Fontecchio and the German club. After the payment of a termination clause of which it is rumored could be around 250,000 euros, the Italian forward takes the same course -Vitoria- that Rokas Giedraitis already followed last summer, The future of the Lithuanian abroad is, precisely, a one of the great unknowns at Baskonia, after the player expressed his desire to try out in the NBA next season.
