On August 24 (9:00 p.m.), Navarra Arena will once again host a match for the Absolute Men’s Basketball Team. An appointment in which the national team will face Iceland in what will be the first match of the second qualifying round for the 2023 World Cup.
It will be the second time that the Spanish men’s basketball team visits the Pamplona pavilion. The team, led by Sergio Scariolo, faced Lithuania in front of 10,000 people in August 2019 in the first preparation match for the World Cup in China, in which the team won the Gold medal.
The meeting will be organized by the Spanish Basketball Federation and the public company of the Government of Navarra NICDO, in collaboration with the Navarra Basketball Federation.
In the presentation, which took place this morning, Fernando Romay, who has attended on behalf of the Spanish Basketball Federation, has shown his desire to see the pavilion as in 2019: “We would like to see the Navarra Arena full again to see the Spanish team, as happened three years ago. In addition, a magical summer began there that ended with the title of world champion in Beijing. We hope history repeats itself, the Navarrese fans enjoy the team and give them luck for the game against Iceland and for the EuroBasket that will be played later”.
For his part, Miguel Pozueta, president of the Navarra Institute of Sport and Youth of the Government of Navarra, thanked the Spanish Federation for its trust, once again, “in a space like the Navarra Arena and in the fans of the regional community, who will surely turn to welcome the senior team, current world champions, again”.
In this sense, Pablo Bretos, president of the Navarra Basketball Federation, wanted to highlight the importance of this sport in Navarra, “where we are the third federation by number of licenses, and events like this are essential to continue promoting the fans”.
Tickets to attend the match are on sale and can be purchased on the website of the Spanish Basketball Federation from €10 to €45.
To the World Cup
Spain is located in Group L, the same as the Icelandic team, with a record of three wins and one loss. This group of six teams distributes three passports for the World Cup, so the victory could be essential to achieve classification. The rival, Iceland, is establishing itself in the European elite. In the first qualifying round they beat the Netherlands twice and Italy at home. Their best players are Tryggvy Hlinason, Pavel Ermolinskij and Martin Hermannsson, all three with experience in the Spanish league.
In Group L Spain, Italy and Iceland are currently tied with 7 points, while Georgia has 6, Ukraine 5 and the Netherlands close the group with 4 points.
This match corresponds to the first window of the second qualifying phase for the 2023 World Cup, but it will also serve as preparation for EuroBasket 2022, which will take place from September 1 to 18 this year in Germany, the Czech Republic, Georgia and Italy, having been delayed due to the pandemic, as it was scheduled for September 2021.
The final squad for this second phase will be known this week and the team that will finally play in Pamplona will be announced the days before the match.
