ANDhe Lenovo Tenerife took the victory in the opening match of the VIII City of Getafe Tournament by defeating Baskonia by 81 to 67. Those from Vidorreta, who will close their preseason next Sunday against URBAS Fuenlabrada, showed that they had their machinery more and better greased than that of the Vitoria, who suffered their first defeat of the summer. A 25-13 run in the fourth quarter aborted the reaction of a Baskonia that was behind for much of the clash. Fran Guerra was the Canaries’ top scorer with 14 points, leading a group of 5 players in double digits in scoring. On the rival side, who could not count on Baldwin, Costello and Raieste, Granger finished with 13 points.

Tenerife needed their first two triples to achieve the first advantages (12-7) mediated a first quarter in which defensive intensity and inaccuracies in attack were the general trend. The Baskonia suffered in static attack and missed the presence of Baldwin IV, down due to a muscular overload. Only 6 consecutive points from Giedraitis prevented Tenerife from escaping for more distance at the end of the first 10 minutes (18-14). The Yellows gradually expanded their lead in the second quarter thanks to a patient attack and a good rotation of the ball, which allowed them to find many free shots, especially from the corners (31-24, min.17). Baskonia’s first two triples, one from Fontecchio and the other from Giedraitis, kept the game alive at halftime (36-32).

Dusko’s men had their best minutes after intermission, using a quintet with four shooters and finding a good defensive rhythm. Pushed by Peters’s aim, Baskonia managed to turn the score around midway through the third period (50-51, min.26), but the joy did not last long for the Basque team. The return to the field of Fitipaldo calmed the Tenerife waters and returned the success to his team. With the free kick as an ally, Vidorreta’s men were able to enter the last quarter with their hands on the wheel (56-54). Shermadini -who had only played 3 minutes in the first half- took over from the Uruguayan point guard and began to punish the rival paint, which together with a better defense allowed Tenerife to open the gap (73-63, min.36). A time-out, Granger’s return and a couple of Enoch baskets seemed to bring Baskonia closer, but Salin appeared with two consecutive 3-pointers going into the last minute to finally sentence.
