Five editions of the Olympic Games. A milestone only within the reach of the chosen ones, which is what they will be Rudy fernandez Y Pau Gasol next Monday when they step on the Saitama parquet in Spain-Japan. A historical record that before this edition of Tokyo 2021 can only boast four players.

One of them, the last to achieve it, a Spaniard, until 2017 captain of the National Team, Juan Carlos Navarro. ‘Juanqui’ debuted as an Olympian in Sydney 2000 and subsequently chained four more Games uninterruptedly: Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 and Rio 2016.

The first to inscribe his name on this extraordinary page of Olympic history was the Puerto Rican Teofilo Cruz: Rome 1960, Tokyo 1964, Mexico 1968, Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976. The best position of his team was the fourth position in 1964. In total he played 39 games.

Then came the Brazilian ‘gunboat’ Oscar schmidt: Moscow 1980, Los Angeles 1984, Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996. His are seven of the best individual scoring marks in an Olympic match, the first being the 55 points he scored in 1988 precisely against Spain. Oscar is also the highest scorer in the history of the Olympic tournament: a total of 1,093 points. He played 38 games.

The Australian forward Andrew Gaze, son of the historic coach Lindsay Gaze, he played his first Games in Los Angeles 1984, and after them he also participated in Seoul 1988, Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. After Oscar, he is the second highest scorer in history (789). He played 40 games, the most in history so far.

The list of players with 4 Games behind their backs is already more extensive, and in it they appear, in addition to Rudy and Pau, José Manuel Calderón, Felipe Reyes and Epi.

Rudy Y Pau They will not be the only ones who will reach the Olympus of the 5 Games in Tokyo, so will the Argentine Luis Scola. Of course, Pau and Rudy, like Navarro, will be among these 7 legendary players, the only ones who, in addition, have medals on their record, three each: the silver from 2008 and 2012 and the bronze from 2016.

Pau: “It was one of my challenges”

“It was one of my challenges, especially with this injury process that I have had, two years away from the slopes,” Pau has assured in recent days. Being and competing in my fifth Olympic Games has been one of my motivations, the engine that has pushed me to keep working. Not many have succeeded in our country. In basketball there is Juan Carlos, who has also competed for them… I am very excited that the moment will come, to help the team and hopefully we can get a good result ”.

Rudy: “Something incredible”

“It will be my fifth Olympics, something incredible that I could not imagine when I started,” is how Rudy feels. The now captain of the SEAM remembers that “my first Games were very happy because in addition to making my debut with the National Team in an important competition, I lived it with my sister.” And he has also recognized that “the first medal is always very exciting, but I hope we can get another, it would be four in a row that would demonstrate the work that the Spanish basketball federations and clubs continue to do.”
