154 absolute international winches, 7 medals and the memory of unforgettable matches is part of the legacy left by Sergio Rodríguez, one of the most outstanding players in the recent history of the National Team, who this Wednesday announced his decision to withdraw from international competitions.

Sergio Rodríguez made his debut as an absolute international in 2005, in the call for the Eurobasket that year, in which he formed a triplet of bases with José Manuel Calderón and Carlos Cabezas. His explosion came a year later, in the historic 2006 World Cup, in which his performance in the unforgettable semifinal against Argentina shone in a special way.

Since those beginnings and until the Olympic Games this summer, his career in the National Team has recorded 5 Eurobasket, 3 Olympic Games and 2 World Cups. In total in those 154 caps he has signed 885 points, and 456 assists, one of his great and most spectacular specialties, in which he has created a school in Europe and in the NBA. All this initialed with 7 medals: 2 gold (2006 World Cup and 2015 Eurobasket), 2 silver (2007 Eurobasket and 2012 Olympic Games) and another 3 bronze (2013 Eurobasket, 2016 Olympic Games and 2017 Eurobasket). Throughout all these years he has been an essential player for Sergio Scariolo, Juan Antonio Orenga, Pepu Hernández and Mario Pesquera, the coach with whom he made the jump.

A legendary career, to which is added his brilliant career and record with the clubs in which he has played: Students, Portland Trail Blazers, Sacramento Kings, New York Knicks, Real Madrid, Philadelphia 76ers, CSKA Moscow and since 2019 Armani Milan. With all of them he has garnered titles and collective and individual successes.

And another gold in Formation

Sergio Rodríguez was also an international standout in the training categories, before making the leap to the Absolute. In 2004 he was one of the great protagonists of the gold medal won by Spain in the U18 European Championship held in Zaragoza, in which he coincided with Sergio Llull. He also played, a year later, the European U20, in which he shared a team with Marc Gasol, just a few weeks before his debut as an intern at all.

Garbajosa: “Grateful for having given us their sporting and human qualities”

The president of the FEB wanted to appreciate that the ‘Chacho’ “It has been a fundamental pillar of the history of the last decade and a half of the National Team. He has contributed his sporting and human quality not only to the sporting successes of the team in which he has participated but also to the continuity and transmission of the values ??of a project that has been an example for world basketball ”. Jorge Garbajosa has expressed “Our infinite gratitude to Sergio for having been part of #LaFamilia, for having done so with the utmost commitment and for leaving a legacy that will undoubtedly inspire the new generations of Spanish basketball and the National Team”. The FEB president recalls that “Talking about ‘Chacho’ is special for me because we have shared championships and concentrations, numerous successes and fortunately few disappointments, and our relationship has gone beyond that of mere companions, it is above all friendship”. And finally added that “We all wish him the best from now on, professionally and personally, and he knows that he will always have the doors of the Spanish Federation open because he will never cease to be part of our team.”
